Cairo (Egypt), 6 October (LaPresse/AP) – Indirect talks between Israel and Hamas have begun in Sharm el-Sheikh, a tourist resort on the Red Sea in Egypt. An anonymous Egyptian official said the talks began this afternoon. The Israeli delegation is led by chief negotiator Ron Dermer, while the Hamas delegation is led by Khalil al-Hayyah. Hamas has stated that the negotiations will focus on the first phase of a ceasefire, including the partial withdrawal of Israeli forces and the release of hostages held in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israel. According to the Egyptian state newspaper al-Ahram, US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner are also expected to participate in the talks. The talks in Egypt are expected to proceed quickly. On Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said they would be ‘limited to a few days at most,’ although some Hamas officials warned that more time may be needed to locate the bodies of hostages buried under the rubble.
