London (United Kingdom), 3 October (LaPresse/AP) – Sarah Mullally, Bishop of London, has been appointed Archbishop of Canterbury. This is the first time a woman has been chosen as spiritual leader of the Church of England. Mullally will have to address divisions over the treatment of women and LGBTQ people, as well as concerns that Church leaders have not done enough to root out the sexual abuse scandals that have plagued the Church for over a decade. She succeeds 105 men and becomes the first woman to lead 85 Anglicans worldwide. She will replace former Archbishop Justin Welby, who announced his resignation in November after an independent investigation found that he had failed to inform the police about repeated physical and sexual abuse by a volunteer at a Christian summer camp as soon as he became aware of it.
