Rome, Sep 27 (LaPresse) – "Frontex is a civilian organization whose main task is to support EU countries in border management. We are not a military organization, so we cannot carry out military tasks, such as escorting ships for protection at sea. Moreover, vessels involved in Frontex operations are not equipped for this purpose." This was stated to LaPresse by a Frontex spokesperson, after around sixty MEPs from The Left, Greens, S&D, and Non-affiliated sent a letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, requesting urgent Frontex intervention to protect the Global Sumud Flotilla.
