Kathmandu (Nepal), 14 September (LaPresse/AP) – Violent protests that broke out in Nepal last week have caused the deaths of at least 72 people, according to an updated toll from the authorities. Protesters, who were demonstrating against corruption among the ruling class, also destroyed government buildings and politicians' homes. Nepal's new prime minister, Sushila Karki, took office today and called for “calm and cooperation to rebuild” the Himalayan nation. She told senior officials gathered at her temporary office that each family of the protesters killed would receive monetary compensation of 1 million rupees (about 6,000 euros) and assured them that the injured would be treated. ‘We must all unite to rebuild the country,’ Karki added, pledging to work to put the South Asian nation back on the right track.
