Japan: Prime Minister Ishiba confirms decision to resign

Rome, 8 September (LaPresse) – Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced on Sunday his intention to resign one year after taking the helm of the country. Thanks to the recovery in his government's approval ratings, Ishiba, once considered a reformist outsider within the LDP, sought to remain in office as long as possible, but apparently succumbed to growing pressure from party lawmakers. However, his resignation could signal political turmoil in Japan, as the LDP is likely to continue struggling to unite with an opposition party to form a majority coalition in parliament due to political divisions, even after Ishiba's resignation. Ishiba's announcement came after talks on Saturday evening with former Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, both of whom are close to Ishiba. They are believed to have urged him to avoid a split in the LDP.
