Washington (USA), Sept. 2 (LaPresse) – Judge Charles Breyer has ruled that the Trump administration’s use of National Guard troops during protests against immigration control measures in Southern California was illegal.

Breyer found that President Donald Trump’s administration violated federal law by deploying troops to accompany federal agents during immigration raids. However, the Washington judge did not order the withdrawal of troops still present in the area.

The state of California had filed the lawsuit, arguing that the deployment of troops to Los Angeles during the summer violated a law prohibiting the military from enforcing domestic laws.

Trump administration lawyers argued that the Posse Comitatus Act did not apply because the troops were protecting federal agents, not enforcing the law. They claimed the troops had been mobilized under an authority allowing the president to deploy them.
