Venice, Sept. 2 (LaPresse) – Social centers of the Northeast and the Adl Cobas union have announced that, if Israel blocks the Gaza Sumud Flotilla — the naval mission headed toward Palestine — they are prepared to respond by blocking the port of Venice. The statement follows last Saturday's demonstration at the Venice Lido, described by organizers as an “extraordinary display of collective strength” and a clear sign of opposition to “Israel’s genocidal state” and to the governments that support it.
The statement highlights how the Palestinian cause now marks a clear dividing line between those defending justice and freedom and those who continue to hide behind ambiguity and double standards, especially in the Italian and European political debate.
At the same time as the protest in Venice, the city of Genoa also mobilized in support of the Flotilla: port workers there have been engaged for months in strikes and targeted blockades to prevent the transit of arms destined for Israel — an action that has gained international attention and is affecting major shipping companies like Maersk.
From Genoa came a clear message: “If they touch the Flotilla, we’ll block the port.” The social centers and Adl Cobas have taken up the call and say they are ready to turn outrage into “direct action and disobedience.” The statement concludes with a call for ongoing mobilization, especially in light of recent remarks by Israeli far-right minister Ben-Gvir, who threatened to treat Flotilla members “like terrorists.”
“As long as the light on Palestine stays on,” they conclude, “resistance is possible. And we will not stop.”
