Rio De Janeiro (Brazil), 2 September (LaPresse/AP) – The verdict phase of the trial against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, accused of leading a conspiracy to remain in power, begins today. A Supreme Court commission has scheduled five days of hearings from today until 12 September to decide whether the former far-right leader is guilty of attempting to overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election, when he was narrowly defeated by current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro, who denies any wrongdoing, has been charged with five counts related to attempting to organise a coup. He is under house arrest and has repeatedly claimed that the trial is politically motivated.
