Kabul (Afghanistan), 1 September (LaPresse/AP) – At least 250 people have been killed and 500 injured in a 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck the Nangahar region in eastern Afghanistan, near the city of Jalalabad. This was reported by the Disaster Management Authority of the Kunar region, where damage and casualties were recorded. Deaths and injuries occurred in particular in the districts of Nur Gul, Soki, Watpur, Manogi and Chapadare. "Rescue operations are still ongoing and several villages have been completely destroyed. The numbers of dead and injured are changing. Medical teams from Kunar, Nangarhar and the capital Kabul have arrived in the area,‘ said Sharafat Zaman, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Health. He added that many areas are still unable to report casualty figures and that ’the numbers are expected to change" as deaths and injuries are reported.
