Middle East: Global Sumud Flotilla departs today from Barcelona, with Thunberg on board

Barcelona (Spain), 31 August (LaPresse) – The Global Sumud Flotilla, the largest international civilian mission attempting to break the naval blockade of Gaza, departs today from Barcelona. According to the organisers, around twenty boats will set sail from Moll de la Fusta. Departure is scheduled for 3 p.m. Among those on board will be Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, who previously took part in the Freedom Flotilla Coalition's Madleen humanitarian ship expedition and was subsequently arrested by Israeli authorities, former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau, and Brazilian activist Thiago Avila. The boats will join those sailing from the ports of Tunisia, Greece and Sicily on 4 September. On Saturday evening, a torchlight procession was held in Genoa to bid farewell to five other ships joining the mission. The aim of this initiative, as the organisers explain, is to “break the illegal siege of Gaza by sea, open a humanitarian corridor and end the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people”.
