Thailand: Constitutional Court dismisses Prime Minister Shinawatra

Thailand's Constitutional Court has dismissed Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra from office, ruling that she violated ethical rules imposed by the Constitution during a telephone call with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen. Hun Sen. The phone call in question, which took place on 15 June, was intended to ease tensions over territorial claims along the border, but it sparked outrage in Thailand because the prime minister appeared overly friendly when discussing a matter of national security and seemed to speak ill of a Thai army general. The Constitutional Court's ruling takes effect immediately, so the loss of office is immediate. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who had been prime minister for about a year, was suspended from her duties on 1 July after the court agreed to hear her case.
