Milan, 29 August (LaPresse/AP) – The Church of the Holy Family in Gaza City told the Associated Press today that the approximately 440 people who have taken refuge inside will remain there, along with the clergy who are assisting them. Farid Jubran, spokesman for the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, said the church left the decision up to the people, even though they had little chance of protecting themselves from the fighting. The statement came after the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) announced that it would intensify its attack on Gaza City. ‘When we feel danger, people move closer to the walls or anything else that offers greater protection,’ Jubran said, pointing out that the church has few specific defences. The United Nations humanitarian agency said that its staff and NGOs would also remain in place.
