Frankfurt (Germany), August 27 (LaPresse) – "Security is an absolute priority." This was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a press conference in Berlin following the approval of the new military service bill by the Council of Ministers. The new military service is also a "strong signal from Berlin to European allies that Germany is a reliable partner in NATO. Russia is and remains a threat," Merz added. Initially, the decision is based on voluntary participation. However, Merz emphasized at the press conference: "We want to make military service more attractive. If we find the need to make further changes, we will do so." Defense Minister Boris Pistorius added: "This is not just any law; it is a giant step. It must be sustainable and long-term. The mentality of young men and women must change." Young men and women must decide: "Am I interested? Do I want to take responsibility? And if yes, where?" The goal is to promote volunteering by making the service more appealing. "We are integrating drone training. We are involving everyone in active groups. We are improving pay. In the future, the salary will be 2,300 euros net," explained Merz and Pistorius.
