Beijing (China), 23 August (LaPresse/AP) – Twelve workers have died and four are missing in China following the collapse of a railway bridge under construction over the Yellow River in the north-western province of Qinghai. This has been reported by Chinese state media. Aerial photos from the official Xinhua news agency show a large section missing from the aquamarine arch of the bridge. A bent section of the bridge hangs down over the river below. At the time of the collapse, which occurred around 3 a.m. on Friday, 16 workers were on the bridge. According to Xinhua, a steel cable broke during a tensioning operation, according to Xinhua. Boats, a helicopter and robots have been mobilised to search for the missing. According to the English-language newspaper China Daily, the bridge is 1.6 kilometres long and stands 55 metres above the river.
