Buenos Aires (Argentina), 22 August. (LaPresse/AP) – A strong earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale shook the southern Atlantic Ocean. The quake struck at 11.16 p.m. local time in Argentina (4.16 a.m. in Italy), about 710 kilometres south-east of Ushuaia, in the Drake Passage, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake had a preliminary depth of 10.8 kilometres. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said there was no longer a tsunami threat, following an earlier warning from Chilean authorities for some areas of Antarctica. No evacuation orders were issued for Chile and Argentina, the two countries closest to the earthquake's epicentre. The Drake Passage connects the South Atlantic Ocean and the South Pacific Ocean between the southern tip of South America and the Antarctic Peninsula.
