Rodanthe (North Carolina, USA), Aug. 21 (LaPresse/AP) – Hurricane Erin struck the Outer Banks, the long and narrow strip of sand off the coast of North Carolina, with strong winds and waves that flooded parts of the main highway, Highway 12 on Hatteras Island, and inundated oceanfront homes.
The storm has moved closer to the Mid-Atlantic coast and, according to forecasts, could strengthen again into a major hurricane. High waves have led to the closure of beaches from North Carolina to New York.
According to forecasters, Erin is expected to veer offshore before making landfall.
