Frankfurt (Germany), August 21 (LaPresse) – The German party AfD (Alternative for Germany) has filed an appeal with the Federal Constitutional Court against the decision by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution to classify it as a "suspected case" of right-wing extremism. The party's national leadership announced the move.
Previously, the Higher Administrative Court in Münster had ruled the classification to be lawful, and the Federal Administrative Court rejected the party’s request for a review. The appeal to the Constitutional Court now represents AfD’s final legal avenue to contest the decision.
According to co-chairs Tino Chrupalla and Alice Weidel, the Münster ruling "constitutes a serious violation of our members' freedom of expression and labels as allegedly unconstitutional statements that are in fact entirely legitimate." For this reason, they added, the decision "cannot stand."
