Belgrade (Serbia), August 19 (LaPresse) – Thousands of anti-government protesters marched again on Monday in Serbia, chased by riot police armed with batons through central Belgrade, prompting Serbia’s populist president, Aleksandar Vucic, to reaffirm his commitment to crack down hard on demonstrators.
The protest in the country’s capital remained peaceful until a group of young people, reportedly football ultras, broke away from the crowd and threw stones at the ruling party’s offices in the city center, shattering the front windows.
Riot police quickly intervened with armored trucks, dispersing the crowd and triggering a stampede. President Vucic appeared in front of his party’s damaged headquarters, calling the protesters “terrorists” and declaring that “soon, citizens will be freed from this terror and this evil.”
