Milan, August 19 (LaPresse) – In 2024, 383 humanitarian workers have been killed in global hotspots, nearly half of them in Gaza during the war between Israel and Hamas. This was reported by the United Nations humanitarian office on the occasion of the annual day dedicated to the thousands of people intervening in crises to help others. The head of UN humanitarian aid, Tom Fletcher, stated: “Attacks of this magnitude, with no accountability, are a shameful indictment of international inaction and apathy. As a humanitarian community, we once again call on those with power and influence to act for humanity, protect civilians and humanitarian workers, and bring perpetrators to justice.” The Aid Worker Security Database, which has collected data since 1997, reported that the number of killings increased from 293 in 2023 to 383 in 2024, with over 180 in Gaza. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), most of the humanitarian workers killed were national staff serving their own communities, attacked while working or at home. Last year, there were 599 serious attacks against humanitarian workers, a sharp increase from 420 in 2023, according to database figures.
