Ukraine, Trump: ‘Possible security guarantees from the US, but not in the form of NATO’

Milan, 15 August. (LaPresse/AP) – US President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Alaska for a summit with Vladimir Putin, said there is ‘a possibility’ that the United States will offer Ukraine security guarantees alongside European powers. ‘But not in the form of NATO,’ he clarified, thus ruling out the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO. The tycoon said it would be up to the Ukrainians to decide whether to cede territory to Putin as part of a peace agreement, but added: ‘I think they will make the right decision.’ ‘I'm not here to negotiate for Ukraine,’ Trump said, ‘I'm here to bring them to the negotiating table.’
