Washington (USA), Aug. 12 (LaPresse) – The Trump administration and Harvard University are close to a legal agreement under which the university would agree to spend $500 million on programs favored by the White House, in exchange for the restoration of billions of dollars in federal research funding. The New York Times, citing sources familiar with the negotiations, reports that under the deal, Harvard would commit to spending $500 million on professional training and research programs. This amount, expected to be disbursed over several years, would meet President Donald Trump’s demand that Harvard spend more than double the amount agreed last month by Columbia University. It would also satisfy Harvard’s desire not to pay the government directly, as Columbia is doing. Harvard would also commit to continuing efforts to combat antisemitism on campus. In return, the university would have its research funding restored and avoid the appointment of a supervisor, thereby maintaining its academic independence.
