Madrid (Spain), Aug. 12 (LaPresse) – In Spain, thousands of people have been evacuated due to dozens of fires affecting multiple regions, forcing them to spend the night away from their homes. According to El País, more than 3,700 people were evacuated in Castile and León, about 2,000 in the province of Cádiz, and 180 in the Tres Cantos area near Madrid. Among the active fires are those that broke out yesterday near Tarifa in the province of Cádiz, the fire in Tres Cantos, and around ten fires in the provinces of León and Zamora. The forest fire that started last Saturday in Yeres, in the province of León, which affected the Las Médulas natural area, a UNESCO World Heritage site, forced the evacuation of 700 residents from four localities. The situation has since improved, and many fire fronts are now under control. The flames did not damage the Roman-era gold mines but did affect the surrounding vegetation, including century-old chestnut trees that were completely destroyed. The government of Castile and León reported that most of the fires recorded in the region were caused by deliberate actions.
