Milan, 5 August (LaPresse) – During a security meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir outlined to participants how operations in the Gaza Strip would continue and opposed the possibility of occupation. Sources familiar with the details told Ynet, adding that Zamir made it clear that the IDF would take whatever action the political leadership decided. The sources added that the atmosphere during the meeting was professional and that the Chief of Staff made it clear that he had not threatened to resign. According to the Haaretz newspaper, Zamir's plans would allow military operations to be easily halted if a ceasefire were negotiated. The Israeli military leadership opposes a full occupation of Gaza and prefers to continue targeted incursions and establish routes that would divide the enclave into several areas. The head of the IDF proposed that troops completely control the Netzarim corridor, of which they currently control only the eastern part, and create other routes such as the Morag corridor, which divides Rafah and Khan Younis in southern Gaza. However, the army predicted that this plan of operations could cause casualties among the hostages still being held captive.
