Milan, 5 August (LaPresse) – ‘This sad carnage must end. Humanitarian workers and civilians must not be targeted.’ This was reiterated by Rosario Valastro, President of the Italian Red Cross, upon learning of the killing in Gaza of Abdul Majeed Adnan Salameh, a 28-year-old volunteer with the Palestinian Red Crescent. Committed since the beginning of the conflict to supporting the population, he was in the American Israeli Aid area west of Rafah yesterday looking for food when, together with a group of civilians exhausted by hunger, he was targeted in an attack. ‘The civilian population, humanitarian workers and health workers are not and must not be targets,’ Valastro stressed. ‘The crossings must be opened and safe access to aid must be guaranteed for the entire population. Hunger must not be a cause of death, nor should it be the cause of death of the workers of our Movement who, although tired and severely tested by so much violence, continue to help those who suffer, in fulfilment of our mission: to alleviate the suffering of people.’
