Turin, Aug 5 (LaPresse) – The U.S. State Department has condemned Brazil’s Supreme Court after it ordered house arrest for former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently on trial for allegedly plotting to overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election. The State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs criticized Justice Alexandre de Moraes—who issued the order—accusing him on X of "using Brazil’s institutions to silence opposition and threaten democracy." The post reads: “Imposing further restrictions on Bolsonaro’s ability to speak in his defense is not public service. Let Bolsonaro speak.” The U.S. has also sanctioned Justice de Moraes for what it calls "serious human rights violations," announcing visa restrictions against him and other judicial officials involved in the case. “The United States condemns Moraes’ order placing Bolsonaro under house arrest and will hold accountable all those who support or enable such sanctioned conduct,” the post concludes.
