Bogotá (Colombia), August 4 (LaPresse) – The body of the fifth miner who had been missing for 3 days after the collapse of a copper mine in Chile, Moises Pavez, was found at 3:30 PM local time (9:30 PM in Italy). The bodies of the other four missing miners had been found and identified in the previous hours. The trapped workers were located thanks to GPS devices, but rescuers had to drill through dozens of meters of rock to reach them. The mine collapsed during an earthquake. Rescuers were trying to reach five miners trapped on Thursday evening local time in the El Teniente mine, in central Chile, after rocks fell around them during a 4.2 magnitude earthquake. The copper mine is one of the largest in Chile. Nine other miners were injured. Authorities are investigating to determine whether the earthquake was natural or caused by mining activity at El Teniente. The Chilean prosecutor's office has also opened a criminal investigation to determine if safety regulations were violated.
