Naypyidaw, July 31 (LaPresse) – Myanmar’s military junta has ended the national state of emergency, stepping up preparations for elections scheduled in December, which are being boycotted by opposition groups and criticized by international observers, reports The Guardian.
The state of emergency had been declared in February 2021, when the military overthrew the civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi, triggering a multi-front civil war that has claimed thousands of lives.
The measure had granted junta leader Min Aung Hlaing full control over all branches of government — legislative, executive, and judicial — but the general has recently framed the elections as a way out of the conflict.
