Germany: police say landslide after heavy rain likely caused train derailment

Berlin (Germany), 28 July (LaPresse/AP) – Investigators believe that a landslide caused by heavy rain was probably responsible for the derailment of a regional train in Germany yesterday, in which two carriages left the tracks in a wooded area near Riedlingen, about 158 kilometres west of Munich. More than 100 people were travelling on the Deutsche Bahn train, with a death toll of three and 41 injured. The three people who lost their lives, according to reports from German police this morning, are the driver, another employee and a passenger. Some of the injured are in serious condition. Police said heavy rain in the area caused a sewer to overflow, which probably led to the collapse of an embankment where the derailment occurred.
