Washington (USA), 23 July (LaPresse) – The Trump administration has opened a new investigation into Harvard University's participation in a government programme for obtaining visas for foreign students and teachers. Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed Harvard President Dr Alan Garber of the investigation in a letter on Wednesday. In a statement, the State Department said that “all sponsors participating in this programme are required to fully comply with regulations governing exchange students, ensure transparency in reporting, and demonstrate a commitment to promoting the principles of cultural exchange and mutual understanding upon which the programme is based”. Furthermore, "to maintain the privilege of sponsoring exchange students, sponsors must comply with all regulations, including conducting their programmes in a manner that does not compromise the foreign policy objectives or national security interests of the United States. The American people have a right to expect that their universities respect national security, comply with the law, and provide safe environments for all students. The investigation will ensure that State Department programmes are not contrary to our nation's interests," the statement concludes.
