Frankfurt (Germany), 13 July (LaPresse) – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has issued a stern warning about the consequences for the German economy of the punitive tariffs threatened by US President Donald Trump. A 30% tariff ‘would hit German exporters hard,’ Merz said in an interview with ARD. ‘If that happens, we could suspend most of our economic policy efforts because it would overshadow everything,’ he added. Merz said he was working ‘very hard’ to ‘find a solution’ by the 1 August deadline set by Trump. The goal is ‘to ensure that tariffs of this magnitude do not come into force.’ The prerequisite is unity within the European Union and a ‘reasonable dialogue with the American president.’ Merz said he spoke ‘intensively’ with Trump on Friday and with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen over the weekend.
