Turin, 13 July (LaPresse) – At the start of his speech to the armed forces, French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to the memory of the soldiers who died this year and those who were wounded, as well as their commitment in a “period of upheaval”. ‘These changes are now underway, and perhaps never since 1945 has freedom been so threatened,’ said the head of state, quoted by French media, referring in particular to ‘imperialism and annexationist powers’ such as Russia or the ‘law of the strongest.’ ‘Let me be clear: we Europeans must now guarantee our own security,’ Macron continued after listing the various conflicts around the world. France, he stressed, must protect the ‘freedom of our economic model,’ that of ‘our political and democratic model’ from attempts at interference, our ‘individual freedom in the world of screens’ and ‘finally, the freedom of our nation, when the risks of division threaten our dignity.’
