Milan, July 12 (LaPresse) – Mexico has responded to US President Donald Trump's announcement of a 30% tariff starting August 1, criticizing the move as “unfair.” "On Friday, July 11, a Mexican delegation composed of the secretaries of Economy, Foreign Affairs, Finance, Public Security, and Energy met with the departments of State, Commerce, and Energy, as well as the National Security Council and the Office of the US Trade Representative to establish a permanent binational working table to address key issues in bilateral relations. The table was convened by the Department of State and will include the participation of all institutions involved in the various issues. Topics such as security, immigration, the border, and water management were addressed, as well as economic relations between the two countries. We have been informed that, as part of the profound change in US trade policy, all countries will receive a letter signed by the US president establishing new tariffs as of August 1. We have made it clear at the table that this is unfair treatment and that we disagree," said a joint statement released by the Mexican ministries of Economy and Foreign Affairs. However, the ministries added that “it has been agreed that the first major task of the permanent binational table will be to work to ensure that, before that date,” i.e., August 1, “an alternative is found that protects businesses and jobs on both sides of the border.” “It is very important to have established, as of July 11, the necessary path and space to resolve any possibility that the new tariffs will come into effect on August 1. In other words, Mexico is already in negotiations,” Mexico City concluded.
