Milan, 7 July (LaPresse) – A senior Hamas security official told the BBC that the Palestinian armed group has lost control of 80% of the Gaza Strip and that armed clans are filling the vacuum. "Let's be realistic: there is almost nothing left of the security structure. Most of the leaders, about 95%, are now dead… The active figures have all been killed,‘ he said, ’so what is stopping Israel from continuing this war?" According to the officer, Hamas attempted to reorganise during the 57-day ceasefire with Israel earlier this year, reorganising its political, military and security councils. But then Israel ended the truce in March, targeting Hamas' remaining command structures and leaving the group in chaos. ‘As far as security is concerned, I want to be clear: it has completely collapsed. Completely destroyed. There is no control anywhere,’ the official reiterated.
