Greece, large fire in southeastern Crete: houses and hotels evacuated

Milan, July 3 (LaPresse) – It is the second day of fires on the Greek island of Crete, where flames are raging in the municipality of Ierapetra in the southeast of the island, in the Lasithi region. According to the newspaper Kathimerini, firefighters report that the large fire, which shifts depending on the direction of the strong winds blowing in the area, has “split” into three fronts around Ferma, Achlia, and Schinokapsala. Hundreds of residents and visitors from these areas, as well as from Agia Fotia, Galini, and the settlement of Koutsounari, have been relocated following authorities' instructions and alerts sent via the 112 emergency system, and have been accommodated in hotels elsewhere. Meanwhile, some residents and visitors spent the night in the indoor gymnasium of Ierapetra, opened to provide safe shelter. Emergency medical services are on high alert. Eight ambulances are operational, having so far transported three people with respiratory issues, two with minor injuries, and one with mobility problems to the general hospital of Ierapetra. According to firefighters, a major firefighting operation is underway using ground and aerial means, with reinforcements arriving from Athens. The operational forces are constantly increasing, but the firefighting operation remains difficult due to gusty winds and the rugged terrain.
