Heatwave: Record June in Barcelona, highest temperatures in over 100 years

Barcelona (Spain), 1 July (LaPresse/AP) – Barcelona has recorded its hottest June since records began over a century ago, according to the Spanish national meteorological service. The Can Fabra Observatory, located on a hill overlooking Barcelona, recorded an average temperature of 26 degrees Celsius, breaking the record set in 1914. The highest average recorded in a month of June was previously 25.6 °C in 2003. The same weather station reported that a maximum daily temperature of 37.9°C was recorded on Monday 30 June. Barcelona is usually spared the most intense heat in Spain thanks to its location between the hills and the Mediterranean Sea in the north-eastern corner of the country, but the heatwave has affected most of Spain.
