Washington (USA), 26 June (LaPresse) – The Supreme Court has ruled that states can cut Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood, the largest provider of abortion services in the United States. This is a victory for Republicans, who have been pushing for cuts to the organisation's funding. The case concerns funding for other health services provided by Planned Parenthood in South Carolina, but the ruling could have broader implications for Medicaid patients. South Carolina argued that no public funding should go to the major abortion provider, even if that money is not earmarked for abortions. Planned Parenthood argued that patients turn to the organisation for services such as contraception and cancer screening, in part because it can be difficult to find a doctor who accepts publicly funded insurance.
