Madrid (Spain), 26 June (LaPresse) – The Israeli embassy in Spain has condemned what it called ‘demonising statements against Israel’ made this morning by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on his arrival at the European Council. ‘The position adopted by the Spanish government places Spain on the most extreme and increasingly isolated fringes of the European position on the Middle East. And it places it, unfortunately, on the wrong side of history,’ the embassy said in a statement. Tel Aviv criticised the fact that ‘the Spanish government has chosen not to condemn, even once, the attacks against Israeli civilians’ by Iran, ‘launching an anti-Israel crusade.’ ‘On the contrary, it has called for the suspension of European agreements with Israel and for an arms embargo on the country that was under attack. This is not only deeply regrettable, but also morally indefensible. Let us be clear: Israel, a democratic country facing existential threats on multiple fronts, has the right and the duty to defend its citizens,’ it added.
