Milan, June 12 (LaPresse) – A plane carrying over 240 people has crashed in India shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, according to local media reports.

The Times of India reports that the aircraft, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner bound for London, went down in the Meghani area of the city. Images show a massive cloud of black smoke rising from the crash site.

The plane that crashed today in Ahmedabad, in the northwestern Indian state of Gujarat, was Air India flight AI171 en route to London Gatwick Airport, the airline confirmed.

Footage broadcast by local television channels shows thick black smoke billowing from the crash site near Ahmedabad airport.
