This is a direct threat to democracy and the result of violent left-wing rhetoric coming from the highest levels of the Colombian government.’ This was the statement made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on X regarding the attack on the 39-year-old Colombian opposition senator, who was shot on Saturday in Bogotá during a rally. "Having seen first-hand the progress Colombia has made in recent decades to consolidate security and democracy, it cannot afford to return to the dark days of political violence. President Petro must tone down the inflammatory rhetoric and protect Colombian officials,‘ Rubio added, stressing that he was ’praying for Miguel's family, his loved ones and his supporters‘ and that ’those responsible for this attack must face justice."
