Turin, 4 June (LaPresse) – The Israeli government has allocated hundreds of millions of shekels to finance the new humanitarian aid mechanism in the Gaza Strip. This was reported by the public broadcaster Kan, contrary to statements by government officials who claimed that Israel has no role in the funding. According to the report, the government approved the transfer of 700 million shekels (approximately 280 million dollars) last month to an unidentified source, referred to by the government only as “the defence establishment”. Citing anonymous officials, Kan reports that the money is being used to fund the new aid mechanism, run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, and that the decision to transfer the funds was taken in secret in an attempt to prevent the public from finding out. The government has insisted that it has no role in funding the GHF, which has come under scrutiny due to a lack of transparency regarding its funds. The organisation has stated that it has received over $100 million in pledges from a foreign government donor, but has not disclosed the donor's name.
