Washington (USA), June 3 (LaPresse/AP) – President Donald Trump appeared to downplay a proposal made by his special envoy to Iran, stating he will insist that Tehran completely dismantle its uranium enrichment program as part of any potential deal to ease heavy sanctions. Trump and Steve Witkoff, who is leading the negotiations for the United States, have repeatedly issued conflicting public messages regarding whether Iran could retain low-level enrichment capabilities for civilian purposes.
The Trump administration maintains that it will not allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon. Trump has presented the negotiations as the best opportunity for both countries to avoid direct military conflict over Iran’s nuclear program. Tehran, which denies seeking to build a nuclear weapon, has insisted it will not accept any agreement that fully eliminates its enrichment program.
“As part of our potential deal, it will not allow any uranium enrichment!” Trump wrote on social media.
