Lisbon (Portugal), May 18 (LaPresse) – Portugal heads to the polls for the third time in three years. Hopes that Sunday’s vote might end the country’s worst political instability in decades could be dashed. The European Union nation of 10.6 million people may once again be left where it started, as polls suggest the election will likely result in another minority government.
Over the past 50 years, power has alternated between the center-right Social Democratic Party and the center-left Socialist Party. They are expected to be the main contenders once again in this election. Voting began at 8 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m., when the first exit polls will be released. Final results are expected around midnight.
