Milan, 17 May (LaPresse) – Two people have died in an avalanche on the Eiger in Switzerland, according to the Bern cantonal police. One man died at the scene, while a second man was resuscitated at the scene but died shortly afterwards in hospital. At the time of the avalanche, there were eight people in the area, seven of whom were swept away and buried. According to the information currently available, the group consisted of two and five people. Both groups were on a high-altitude ski tour. Rescue services were immediately alerted and managed to extract the partially buried victims and transport them by helicopter to hospital for medical treatment. Four men and one woman were taken by helicopter to hospital with injuries. Another man who was in the area but was not caught in the avalanche was unharmed. Due to worsening weather conditions, it was not possible to transport him by helicopter until the evening. The police also report that there are indications as to the identity of the victims, but that formal identification is still ongoing.
