Brussels, May 16 (LaPresse) – “Three years have passed since the beginning of the Russian aggression, and in recent days we have seen President Putin’s true intentions. At first, he called for a ceasefire on the occasion of the May 9 anniversary, which he then failed to respect. Then, Ukraine – with the support of the European Union and the United States – proposed a full, unconditional 30-day ceasefire, which President Putin rejected. Finally, a direct meeting between Ukraine and Russia was offered in Tokyo; President Zelensky was ready to attend, but President Putin never showed up. This shows President Putin's real intent: he does not want peace,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen upon arriving at the European Political Community summit in Tirana.
“Therefore, we must increase the pressure, and that is why we are working on a new sanctions package. It is important for us to want peace, and that means increasing pressure on President Putin until he is ready for peace,” the EU leader emphasized.
