Montevideo (Uruguay), May 13 (LaPresse) – José 'Pepe' Mujica, former President of Uruguay, has died at the age of 89. Mujica had been receiving treatment for esophageal cancer since the spring of 2024, when he was diagnosed with the illness.

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of our comrade Pepe Mujica. President, activist, leader and statesman. We will miss you dearly, dear old friend,” wrote Uruguay’s current president, Yamandú Orsi, on X. “Thank you for all you gave us and for your profound love for your people,” Orsi added.

Although the treatment had left him weak and barely able to eat, Mujica returned to the political scene in the autumn of 2024, campaigning in the national elections that brought Orsi to the presidency.
