Milan, May 13 (LaPresse) – Russia was responsible for the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine in July 2014. This was determined by the United Nations aviation agency, according to the BBC. All 298 people on board the passenger jet died when it was struck by a Russian-made missile. The Kremlin has consistently denied any responsibility for the air disaster.
On Monday, the United Nations' International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council voted that the Russian Federation failed to comply with its obligations under international aviation law, which requires states to "refrain from using weapons against civil aircraft in flight."
Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it was shot down over Ukraine’s Donbas region, amid a conflict between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian forces. The majority of passengers and crew — 196 people — were from the Netherlands.
