Rome, May 13 (LaPresse) – The tenth edition of the Global Report on Internal Displacement by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) once again presents record figures, estimating a total of 83.4 million people living in internal displacement by the end of 2024 — more than double the number reported in the first edition ten years ago.
More specifically, conflicts and violence have caused 73.5 million displacements, while environmental disasters account for 9.8 million — both the highest figures ever recorded. Several countries facing protracted or even decades-long crises, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Yemen, have seen their highest number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) ever in 2024. In Sudan — the site of one of the world’s most neglected humanitarian crises — 11.6 million people were displaced by the end of the year.
