Padang (Indonesia), May 6 (LaPresse/AP) – At least 12 people have died and 23 others were injured in Indonesia following an accident in West Sumatra province, where a bus carrying 34 passengers overturned after the driver lost control on a downhill road, according to local police. The interprovincial bus was traveling from Medan in North Sumatra to the Indonesian capital Jakarta when the brakes reportedly failed near a bus terminal in the city of Padang. Among the dead are two children. Most of the victims’ bodies were trapped under the overturned bus. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, with thirteen suffering serious injuries, including the bus driver. Footage broadcast by local television showed the destroyed bus lying on its side, surrounded by rescuers from the National Search and Rescue Agency, police, and bystanders, while ambulances carried away the dead and injured.
