Milan, 4 May (LaPresse/AP) – Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday in a televised interview that it was not necessary to resort to nuclear weapons in Ukraine and that he hopes it will not be. In a preview of an interview with Russian state television posted on Telegram, Putin said that Russia has the strength and means to bring the conflict in Ukraine to a ‘logical conclusion’. Responding to a question about Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory, Putin said, ‘There was no need to use those (nuclear) weapons… and I hope they won't be necessary. “We have enough strength and means to bring to a logical conclusion what started in 2022 with the result Russia requires,” he said. In November 2024, Putin signed a revised version of Russia's nuclear doctrine, which specifies the circumstances under which he can use Moscow's atomic arsenal, the largest in the world. This version lowered the threshold, granting him this option even in response to a conventional attack supported by a nuclear power.
