Brussels, May 2 (LaPresse) – Ahead of tomorrow’s celebrations for World Press Freedom Day, the European Commission reaffirms its commitment to supporting media freedom and pluralism in the European Union and promoting these principles worldwide. Media freedom and pluralism are fundamental principles at the heart of thriving democracies. As outlined in President von der Leyen’s political guidelines for the 2024-2029 period, the Commission ensures the effective implementation of the European Media Freedom Regulation. The Commission stands firmly with journalists, supporting them in their ability to work safely and securely. It is increasing support for independent media and journalists and their protection, cracking down on pressures and unethical behaviors that threaten their work.

Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Technological Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy, stated: "We are committed to ensuring that Europe remains a beacon for media freedom and pluralism. On World Press Freedom Day, we do not just celebrate a concept, but take a concrete commitment to democracy. The safety of journalists is at stake. Last year, the number of violent incidents against journalists increased, and several lost their lives around the world. This is unacceptable."

Michael McGrath, Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law, and Consumer Protection, stated: "Journalists are the guardians of democracy. Their fearless pursuit of facts and transparency strengthens us all. On this World Press Freedom Day, we must support their vital work and protect their independence, for our rights, for our freedoms, for our values."
